Democratic Republic of Congo

394,791 CYPs in 2015

The Democratic Republic of Congo faces serious and on-going health and human rights challenges after decades of unrest, armed conflicts and civil war. The modern contraceptive prevalence rate is one of the lowest in the region, at 8%, and the HIV prevalence rate, while low, is growing.

The DRC has a population of 77 million; over half of the population is under the age of 15. In order to engage young people on sexual health issues, DKT created a youth program, Batela Lobi Na Yo (Protect Your Future) which aims to inform young people of their contraceptive options. Batela Lobi Na Yo hosts concerts and other youth-friendly events from which we make referrals, and also trains interested young people to become peer educators on sexual health and family planning topics.

In 2011, DKT began an ambitious training program for nurses, doctors, pharmacists and community health workers. We have since trained  providers in every province of the country to provide family planning counseling. Although all contraceptive methods are covered, an emphasis is placed on building capacity of clinicians to provide quality counseling and service delivery of long term methods and enable pharmacists and community mobilizers to provide correct information regarding these methods and make referrals to clinics that have been trained to deliver long term methods.

DKT hosts promotional events for OK Condoms in several provinces. During these events, DKT staff wear OK Condom T-shirts and distribute samples at bars, markets, and other locations.

Since its launch, DKT has expanded its operations to include Bas Congo,  Bandundu and Katanga provinces, and has extended its reach in Kinshasa.

In 2015, DKT Congo sold over 12 million condoms,  300,000 cycles of oral contraceptive pills, and 25,000 IUDs, which translates into 394,791 couple years of protection.
